Unfortunately there is not one simply and single answer to the cause of depression.
You may be suffering from depression for a myriad of reasons; some may be things that you have been dealing with for years while other reasons may be more recent.
Many in the healthcare environment believe that depression is a genetically disposed condition and once in which tends to run in families.
There continues to be discussion as to whether this is totally due to genetic make up or whether it is due to environmental factors or even if perhaps it is due to a little of both.
The healthcare community also believes that there are some people who are more susceptible to the attack of depression but who still require the trigger of an outside event before the depression would manifest itself. Now in this instance we are not referring to the fact that you have had a stressful day or even a stressful week or month, rather stress of this sort refers to long term stress. This long term stress is the sort of stress that may present itself due to s death in the family, the dissolution of a relationship, financial concerns, or even a traumatic event.
Depression can also be caused by certain medications, such as those used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure) or other health conditions, when used for a prolonged time.
Many mothers experience depression after giving birth. This can occur during the first days, weeks and months after giving birth. This post-partum depression can be very tough to manage and requires immediate medical intervention. This depression is associated with the sudden shift in hormone levels. The overall higher rate of depression among women is also thought to be related to the peaks and valleys of hormone levels throughout life.
Another cause of depression can be related to drug, tobacco or alcohol use. Drug use can include both illegal and prescription drugs. These issues are a well known cause of depression.
A debilitating health condition can also be a cause of depression. Issues such a paralysis, loss of a limb, loss of a previously held body function or even a loss of physical endurance can all lead to depression. A changing and aging body can certainly be difficult to handle and many depressive battles have been fought because of these issues.
It is a well known fact that it does not matter your age, depression can attack your life as a teenager or as a senior citizen and if you are of the female gender then you have an even higher risk of becoming depressed.
Depression alters your lifestyle and you may find yourself unable or unwilling to get out of the bed in the morning, unable to get dressed of go to work. You might discover that you are withdrawing and retreating from family, friends and things that you previously held dear. Not only are you impacted when you suffer from depression but so are your family and friends, those people who care about you thee most.
Depression is a tough battle to fight but there are millions who have fought and won. Don’t give up, fight on in hopes of winning the war of depression.
