Depression and Suicide

Depression and suicide are two tragedies that we hope to never see go together.

Suicide is the eighth leading cause of death in the United States and is the end result of depression that has spiraled out of control until the sufferer believes that there is no other answer to their pain except the drastic measure of suicide.

Elderly, Caucasian men show a higher rate of suicide than other groups in the general population and the use of firearms account for over half of the methods used to actually take one’s own life.

Contrary to anecdotal evidence, this holds true for both men and women.

Depending on how deeply depression impacts one’s life it can sometimes lead to thoughts of suicide and there are times that these thoughts can actually lead a person to committing the act of suicide itself. It is a final ending to the suffering that so many who live with depression contemplate sometimes on a daily basis.

It is thought that having low levels of the neurotransmitter, serotonin, which is related to mood and feelings, is directly related to an increased risk of suicide.

The trouble with depression and suicide is that too often those surrounding the person suffering with depression do not fully comprehend what they are seeing when the person begins to actually contemplate killing themselves.

There have even been reports from the families and friends that they thought the discussions of suicide were nothing more than an attempt for the person suffering with depression to focus attention on themselves. What a tragedy that those who could intervene simply believe the misconception that if someone is talking about suicide that they are attempting to draw attention to themselves.

In service to all those who suffer with depression the myths surrounding suicide and depression need to be dispelled.

Some people believe that if a person talks about suicide they will not actually take the steps and commit suicide. Actually talking about it is one of the first signs that someone is seriously thinking about doing it.

If you know someone who is talking this way, do not ignore those comments even if they seem off-handed or attention-seeking. Seeking immediate treatment from a healthcare professional is critical. The person thinking of taking their own life is not doing so because they feel they have nothing to live for.

They usually do not feel either way about living or dying.
