Searching for the Symptoms of Depression

Affecting almost 12% of men and almost 25% of women, the prevalence of clinical depression seems to be growing more and more.

Perhaps we are seeing more of the symptoms of depression because of the fast paced, high-pressured world in which we live.

This fast paced society in which we live collides with the desires for peace and tranquility on a daily basis.

I have to believe that the stresses of working life, significant health problems and even the pain of financial issues all contribute to the symptoms of depression.

Whatever the cause depression is a disease that impacts not only the primary sufferer of depression but that person’s family, friends and co-workers as well.

Symptoms of depression can vary widely running from the extremes of true and total despair to simply a deep, nagging sadness that will not go away.

What ever the cause, for those suffering with depression, the symptoms of depression are often ever too familiar.

When describing the symptoms of depression, many people describe an overwhelming feeling of hopelessness and despair, a sadness that will not go away, the constant ache and heaviness in your body, restlessness, irritability, feelings of guilt or worthlessness, fatigue that does not resolve even when sleep, awakening from a full night’s sleep still as tired as when you went to bed, difficulty concentrating, weight loss or for some weight gain, physical symptoms, such a muscle aches, headaches, stomach issues, generalized pain, that don’t respond to treatment, and in the worse situations, even thoughts of suicide.

Clinicians have found that the symptoms of depression, although they vary in severity from person to person, are frequently found in the majority of those suffering with depression. Symptoms of depression are ones that often persist for weeks or even months. These symptoms begin to control your life and can impact your ability to work, to interact with your family and friends, and even to enjoy a fulfilling sex life.

It is only when those with depression begin to seek help that attention is drawn to the depth of the problem. Treatment for depression can vary from person to person but generally involves a combination of therapies designed specifically for the individual seeking help.

Everyone is different… what works for me may not work for you…but the answer is simple… if you have the symptoms of depression, then seek help. Don’t wait until you feel better, seek help, in order to regain your life and to get better.
